Introduction

Metroselskabet has selected MT Højgaard Danmark, along with consultants Rambøll and Cobe, to design the Copenhagen M4 extension to Ydre Nordhavn, with completion planned for 2030. The project encompasses the construction of two new elevated metro stations on Line 4’s northern section.

Project Award and Scope

Following a tender process, Metroselskabet awarded the contract to MT Højgaard Danmark, with Rambøll and Cobe as consultants. The scope includes planning, design, and construction of the two new stations and 1.6 km of elevated railway. The contract utilized an “early contractor involvement” model. Three teams advanced to the final stage from a larger pool of applicants before the winning consortium was chosen.

Collaboration and Design Phase

The project has entered a collaboration phase. Metroselskabet, MT Højgaard Danmark, Rambøll, and Cobe will develop the concept designs. Carsten Riis, CEO of Metroselskabet, stated, “I look forward to working with MT Højgaard Danmark and their team to develop and design the next two stations on the metro network. The team stood out particularly for their proposed approach to collaboration, design process and the pricing of contract works.”

Station Locations and Development Plans

The two new stations are provisionally named v/Levantkaj and v/Nordhavn C. The v/Levantkaj station will be in a future residential and commercial area, including Nordhavn’s largest school. The v/Nordhavn C station will be near Nordhavnstippen and Tunnelfabrikken, which will feature new businesses, workshops, restaurants, art and cultural venues, leisure facilities, and youth housing.

Timeline and Impact

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the stations opening to passengers in 2030. The M4 line extension will facilitate public transport for residents and visitors in the development area. Travel time from Nordhavn C to Østerport will be approximately seven minutes, and around 14 minutes to Copenhagen Central Station.
