Introduction

Dragados-Besalco has awarded a EUR 100 million contract to a consortium of Vinci Construction, through its subsidiary ETF, and Colas for the second stretch of the Alameda–Melipilla railway line in Chile.

Second Stretch Contract Details

The contract, split equally between ETF and Colas, covers three years of work. It includes dismantling the existing track, providing track materials such as sleepers, ballast, and overhead lines, and the construction and commissioning of a new suburban railway line.

Scope of Works

The works encompass the second stretch of the Alameda–Melipilla line, which spans 21.5 km. This includes the construction of three new tracks equipped with overhead lines: two designated for passenger travel and one for freight transport.

Project Overview

The Alameda–Melipilla railway project in Chile is a major initiative led by EFE (Empresa de Ferrocarriles del Estado). It aims to connect Santiago with the southwest of the country by upgrading existing lines and constructing new infrastructure. The project incorporates three new tracks for passenger and freight use and is projected to reduce travel times by an hour annually for millions of passengers.

Project Components

The project will implement a passenger rail transport service over a 61 km distance, linking Melipilla and Estación Central, a major railway station within the Santiago Metropolitan area. The existing railway line is currently used by freight trains. The development includes constructing a double-track electrified line between Alameda (Estación Central) and Malloco, and a single electrified track between Malloco and Melipilla.

Additional Infrastructure

The project also involves constructing 11 new stations, in addition to the existing Alameda terminal station, to facilitate passenger boarding. It also includes 20 grade-separated road crossings, 10 level crossings, 43 pedestrian overpasses, and 10 pedestrian level crossings associated with protected road level crossings equipped with automated barriers. The railway corridor will be fully enclosed, and all civil works will be designed to ensure universal accessibility.

Conclusion

The line is projected to serve 57 million passengers annually, reducing travel times by one hour.
