Introduction

České dráhy, the first rail operator in the Czech Republic, will continue testing Starlink satellite internet services on its trains throughout the winter months to assess performance in various weather conditions. The pilot program, which utilizes SpaceX’s Starlink system, is currently available on routes between Brno–Česká Třebová–Prague and Brno–Břeclav–Přerov–Olomouc.

Winter Testing of Starlink

České dráhy is extending its pilot program for Starlink through the winter to evaluate the system and roof-mounted antenna’s performance during snow, frost, and other challenging conditions. According to Michal Krapinec, Chairman of the Board and CEO of České dráhy, the decision was made to seriously assess the technology’s capabilities under adverse weather.

Operational and Economic Benefits

The pilot program has demonstrated economic benefits. The terminal is free to use, and the data rate is approximately one-third of the cost usually paid to mobile operators. This factor will be crucial in determining the future deployment of Starlink. Since the trial’s start, passengers have utilized over 5 terabytes of data via the Starlink system.

Technical Implementation

The Starlink terminal is mounted on the roof of a lead car and connected to the train’s power source through dedicated cabling. The technology integrates into the existing Wi-Fi and multimedia system of the InterPanter train, providing internet access exclusively for passengers. Starlink does not interact with the train’s control or safety systems.

About Starlink and Its Railway Applications

Starlink, developed and operated by SpaceX, offers high-speed, low-latency internet via the largest satellite constellation in low Earth orbit. The system supports activities like streaming, online gaming, and video calls. The Starlink Kit designed for railway applications complies with EN 50155 and other rail-specific standards, ensuring safety and resilience in mobile environments. České dráhy aims to improve passenger connectivity and potentially reduce operational costs by testing this technology.

Conclusion

České dráhy will continue testing SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet services on its trains through the winter. The pilot program allows the company to assess the system’s performance in challenging weather conditions and evaluate its economic benefits. The Starlink system provides high-speed, low-latency internet and is installed on InterPanter trains. The technology does not interact with the train’s control or safety systems. The operator is exploring ways to enhance passenger connectivity and potentially reduce operational costs.
