A Legacy of Entrepreneurship: Richard Jay “Rick” Corman

Richard Jay “Rick” Corman, a visionary posthumously honored for 2026, began his impactful career in 1973 immediately after graduating high school in Nicholasville, Kentucky. With humble beginnings utilizing a rented backhoe and a dump truck, he founded R. J. Corman Construction Co. This enterprise rapidly evolved, securing contracts with both Class I railroads and numerous short lines. A pivotal moment arrived after the deregulation facilitated by the Staggers Act of 1980, when Corman acquired his first short line, the Bardstown Line, in 1987. This acquisition marked the genesis of R. J. Corman Railroad Co., a testament to his foresight and business acumen.

Expanding Infrastructure, Advancing the Industry

Under Corman’s leadership, R. J. Corman Railroad Co. has grown into a significant player within the short-line sector, presently operating 19 distinct short lines that collectively cover more than 1,400 miles. His innovative business model not only fostered substantial growth for his company but also underscored the indispensable role that short-line railroads play in strengthening America’s national infrastructure.
