Introduction

Amtrak has awarded design-build contracts and begun preconstruction work on three rail yard modernization projects along the Northeast Corridor (NEC), with completion dates expected in 2029 and 2030. The projects in Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., are designed to improve service reliability and support the maintenance of Amtrak’s growing fleet, including the upcoming Airo trains scheduled to begin operation in 2027.

Project Overview

These modernization efforts are in preparation for the arrival of the new Airo trains. The projects in Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. will provide the necessary infrastructure for maintaining the next generation of passenger trains. Amtrak President Roger Harris stated that these investments are crucial for introducing the Airo trains on the Northeast Corridor. The upgraded yards will establish a consistent system for inspection and servicing, reducing turnaround times while enhancing safety and working conditions for staff.

Boston Yard Modernization

In Boston, a joint venture between SPS New England and Railroad Construction Company is contracted for the project. The scope of work includes designing and building a new two-track Maintenance and Inspection facility, and renovating the existing two-track regional Service and Inspection facility into a Service and Cleaning facility. The phased works are scheduled for completion in 2029.

New York Yard Upgrades

The Sunnyside Yard in New York will be upgraded by a Scalamandre-Citnalta joint venture. The plans include a new two-track Maintenance and Inspection facility, six new Service and Cleaning tracks with canopy coverage, and the consolidation of commissary, employee space, storage, and parking. This project also involves repairing 11 service platforms and reconfiguring key interlockings, with an expected completion date of 2030.

Washington, D.C. Facility Enhancements

In Washington, a Clark-Herzog joint venture will be responsible for delivering new and renovated servicing facilities. These include three exterior Service and Cleaning tracks with canopy coverage and improvements to two maintenance facilities. The project also includes the replacement of the yard’s water main infrastructure. Full completion is expected in 2030.
