Introduction

In May 2017, Alstom announced it had been awarded a contract by the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) to supply 433 of its new generation of X’trapolis Cityduo electric multiple units (EMUs) for the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network in Germany.

Contract Details

The contract, valued at approximately €600 million, includes options for a further 460 trains. The first trains are scheduled for delivery in December 2018, with the last to be delivered by the end of 2020. Alstom will also provide maintenance services for the trains for a period of up to 32 years.

Technical Specifications

The X’trapolis Cityduo EMUs are designed to operate at a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Each trainset will consist of two to four cars, with a total length of up to 75 meters. The trains will be equipped with a modern passenger information system and will comply with the latest European safety standards. The trains will be based on the design of the X’Trapolis platform, already in service in several European countries.

Project Scope

The new trains are intended to enhance the capacity and reliability of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network, which serves the densely populated Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan area, carrying approximately 700,000 passengers daily.
