Introduction

Alstom has secured a contract from Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars, a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, and five years of maintenance for Mumbai Metro Line 4. This order, valued at several hundred million euros, expands Alstom’s involvement in India’s urban mobility sector.

Project Overview

Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line, is a 35.3 km elevated corridor. It will connect Wadala in Central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane. The line will have 32 stations. It will provide connectivity to the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other Mumbai Metro routes.

Contract Details

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) awarded the contract to L&T. The contract includes an integrated systems package. This package covers rolling stock, CBTC signalling and train control, telecommunications, platform screen doors, and depot equipment. L&T has partnered with Alstom for the trains and signalling system, along with associated maintenance.

Alstom’s Scope

Alstom will provide 39 fully driverless six-car Metropolis trainsets and its Urbalis Forward CBTC system. The system is designed to increase line capacity, reduce travel time, and improve energy efficiency. Additionally, Alstom will offer five years of maintenance services.

‘Make in India’ Initiative

In line with the ‘Make in India’ program, all trainsets will be designed and manufactured domestically. Alstom’s Sri City site has experience in delivering driverless trainsets for Mumbai’s Aqua Line, Delhi Metro Phase IV, Chennai Metro Phase II, and international projects.
