Introduction

Northern Trains will introduce new fares from 7 December, offering simpler and more convenient train travel for passengers in Greater Manchester. This change replaces a complex fare structure with two options: anytime and off-peak.

Fare Simplification

The new fares will replace over a dozen different fares currently available on certain routes. These existing fares often restrict customers to specific services or train operating companies. The revised fares will be valid on rail services operated by all companies, with single journeys priced at half the cost of return trips. The average fare in Greater Manchester will decrease by 5.6% due to these changes.

Availability and Scope

The new fares will be available for purchase at the 96 stations in Greater Manchester and online. Other ticket types will still be offered for advance bookings. The aim of this new system is to simplify ticketing and increase price transparency, ensuring passengers can identify the most cost-effective fare for their journeys.

Impact and Savings

Approximately 52% of train journeys in Greater Manchester will become cheaper, with savings of up to GBP 1.50 on certain trips. This reduction is achieved by halving the price of many single fares compared to return fares. Furthermore, around 4,000 customers per week who currently do not get the best value may save money by using anytime tickets during off-peak periods. For the remaining 48% of journeys, there will be a slight price increase, with 85% of these trips seeing a rise of 20p or less.

Integration and Future Plans

Greater Manchester will be among the first areas in the UK to benefit from this rail fare reform. This initiative also prepares the way for contactless payments and integration with the Bee Network by December 2026. TransPennine Express (TPE) services between Stockport and Manchester, Manchester and Stalybridge, and Manchester and Manchester Airport will be included in the fare reform. Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is collaborating with the government and the rail industry to integrate services and stations into the Bee Network, aiming to create a fully integrated public transport system for the city region. In March 2025, tap-and-go payments were launched across Greater Manchester’s Bee Network, with capped fares for buses and trams. TfGM is now planning to extend daily and weekly fare caps to include train travel.

Conclusion

The new fare system in Greater Manchester aims to simplify train travel by offering customers more service options and preventing overpayment. Advance Purchase and season tickets will still be available upon the introduction of simplified rail fares in December. The government’s Railways Bill aims to empower Great British Railways (GBR) to modernize fares and ticketing, thus making travel more adaptable and straightforward.
