Introduction

Network Rail has released CCTV footage of a teenager at a level crossing north of Diss station in Norfolk, highlighting unsafe behavior near the tracks. The incident, recorded earlier this month, involved the individual ignoring safety warnings as a train passed at up to 100 mph.

Incidents at Level Crossings

The footage was released to raise awareness of the dangers associated with unsafe behavior at level crossings, particularly during the half-term holidays. In the past 12 months, there have been eight accidental fatalities at level crossings across Britain, including one in the Anglia region. Additionally, there were 51 near misses on Anglia crossings alone.

Network Rail’s Safety Concerns

Shenel Bullock, Network Rail Anglia’s health and safety manager, commented on the incident. She stated that the footage illustrates the dangerous behavior observed at level crossings, including activities such as taking selfies, filming, or playing games. Bullock emphasized that the risk of death or serious injury is significant and urged individuals to avoid taking risks. She also noted that distractions, such as using screens or wearing headphones, can lead to fatal mistakes. Bullock urged everyone to pay full attention at crossings, follow instructions, and respect safety measures.

Greater Anglia’s Safety Message

Matthew Wakefield, Greater Anglia’s safety, security and sustainability director, reiterated the importance of safety on the railway. He stated that stepping onto the tracks could result in severe injuries or death and advised the public to follow safety rules and exercise caution at level crossings.
