Introduction

NJ Transit will assume operational and maintenance control of the 55 km River Line from Alstom by the end of this year, following a collaborative assessment period.

Operational Transition

By the end of this year, NJ Transit will take full operational and maintenance control of the River Line. This decision reflects the evolving investment needs of the service, which now exceed the original scope of Alstom’s operations and maintenance contract. The transition aims to better position NJ Transit to shape and implement the next phase of development, ensuring the continued strengthening and enhancement of the service.

Alstom’s Role

Alstom remains fully committed to ensuring a smooth handover and will continue to support NJ Transit through its ongoing initiatives. These include the manufacture and delivery of hundreds of new multilevel commuter rail cars, with the first deliveries expected to begin from mid-next year.

Partnership and Collaboration

Both NJ Transit and Alstom value their established partnership and anticipate continued collaboration on projects designed to provide safe, reliable, and innovative public transport for New Jersey and the surrounding region.

River Line Overview

The River Line is an interurban diesel light rail service, similar to commuter rail. It connects Camden and Trenton, running parallel to the Delaware River and serving New Jersey’s capital. The line was initially operated by the Southern New Jersey Rail Group, a joint venture of Bechtel and Bombardier Transportation. Bombardier later became the sole stakeholder. Following Alstom’s acquisition of Bombardier Transportation, Alstom assumed responsibility for the line.
