Introduction

Spain’s Secretary of State for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, José Antonio Santano, announced that the Almería rail integration project is progressing as planned, with a 1.9 km tunnel construction as part of the second phase. This development aims to enhance high-speed rail services and transform the station into an intermodal hub.

Project Progress

During a visit to Almería station, José Antonio Santano reviewed the progress of the works. The integration of the railway into the city is designed to facilitate high-speed services, transforming the station into an intermodal hub.

Infrastructure Details

The second phase of the Almería rail integration includes the construction of a 1.9 km tunnel from the already completed El Puche tunnel to Avenida del Mediterráneo. The tunnel will feature two tracks: one standard gauge and one mixed gauge (three-rail). This configuration will allow both high-speed and conventional trains to operate and connect at surface level to the new Almería station.

Station Upgrades and Intermodal Facilities

The station itself will undergo renovation and expansion to accommodate future demand. It will have six tracks in total: three standard gauge, two conventional gauge, and one mixed gauge. A new station building of approximately 4,800 m² across two floors will be constructed. The development also promotes intermodality with a new bus station and an underground car park with capacity for up to 400 vehicles. Facilities for last-mile mobility, such as areas for taxis, urban transport, and a “kiss and train” drop-off zone, will also be included.

Urban Connectivity and Previous Phase

The project aims to improve urban connectivity by making the railway more accessible. New public spaces will be created, including a pedestrian footbridge linking Avenida Sierra de Alhamilla and Calle Elio Antonio de Nebrija. This phase follows the first stage of integration works for the new high-speed rail line in Almería, which included the Río Andarax–El Puche section and the El Puche rail integration, already in operation.

Conclusion

The Almería rail integration project is progressing with the construction of a 1.9 km tunnel and station upgrades. This project aims to enhance rail services, promote intermodality, and improve urban connectivity. The project is expected to drive economic and social development.
