The Trillium Rail Partners consortium, led by Acciona, has been awarded a contract for a 9.2km light rail expansion in Canada, which includes seven new stations, four of which will be underground.

Project Scope and Consortium Details

The project entails extending the light rail line, connecting Mount Dennis Station to Renforth Drive. The Trillium Rail Partners consortium is responsible for the construction. The consortium comprises Acciona (40%), Amico (30%), and Alberici (30%), with design services provided by WSP. The scope of work includes the integration of railway operating and control systems, as well as signalling, communications, and data networks.

Environmental and Operational Benefits

The Line 5 Eglinton extension aims to improve the existing light rail system, reducing journey times and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Ontario transportation authorities project that the extension will cut up to 5,800t of emissions. The combined effect of the extension and the existing Line 5 Eglinton is anticipated to decrease annual vehicle trips by as much as 6.5 million.

Acciona’s Recent Projects

In the preceding year, Acciona, in collaboration with a local partner, was selected to design and construct a 3km section of the Ontario Line North transit line elevated guideway, which will include five stations in Toronto. Furthermore, in April, Acciona, as part of the ActivUs Alliance, secured the contract for the design and pre-construction phase of the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project in Queensland, Australia. This project aims to enhance train services between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
