Alstom has been awarded a contract by Larsen & Toubro to supply 234 Metropolis metro cars, a Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, and maintenance services for Mumbai Metro Line 4 in India. The contract, announced on August 29, 2025, follows Larsen & Toubro’s award from the Mumbai Metro Regional Development Authority for an Integrated Systems Package for Line 4.
Project Scope and Details
The Integrated Systems Package awarded to Larsen & Toubro includes rolling stock, signalling, telecommunications, platform screen doors, depot machinery, and maintenance services for five years. Mumbai Metro Line 4, also known as the Green Line, will be 35.3km long, connecting Wadala in Central Mumbai to Kasarvadavali in Thane and featuring 32 stations. The project aims to improve connectivity with the Eastern Express Highway, Monorail, and other metro lines in the city.
Manufacturing and Design
The design of the 39 trainsets, each comprising six cars, will be carried out at Alstom’s engineering centre in Bangalore. Manufacturing of the new Metropolis metro cars will take place at the Sri City facility in Andhra Pradesh. Additional components will be produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and Savli, Gujarat. The trains will incorporate features such as interior airflow cooling and wheelchair access.
Technology and Services
Alstom will implement its FlexCare Perform maintenance services for five years for the trains. The new driverless trains will utilize Alstom’s CBTC Urbalis technology, which was developed at its Bangalore site. This technology will be integrated into the Operation Control Centre at Mandale depot and will manage train operations across the line.
