Sydney is to be transformed by an A$12.5bn, European-style metro rail system, government officials have announced.

The 38km, 17-station service will run between the city centre and north-western suburbs and is due to be complete by 2017.
The majority of the line will be underground with 12 of the stations offering interchanges with buses, existing CityRail services or the Light Rail system.
